About the Laurel District

Situated directly below Redwood Heights, the Laurel district extends along MacArthur Ave. and spans between Maple Ave. and the intersection of Rts. 13 and 580. The housing stock is mostly from the 30's and 40's with a mix of more recent styles; some of the homes are situated on very large lots.

While the neighborhood is mostly residential, it is enlivened by a thriving commercial district along MacArthur Ave. Recently, community leaders and local merchants have convinced the City of Oakland to provide the shopping district with a face-lift: now, majestic arches at both ends welcome visitors; new crossings have been added, sidewalks have been re-paved and benches have been installed. Locals have good reason to feel that over time their district can become a Solano or Piedmont Ave.
