About Rockridge

Rockridge gets its name from a tract of land that was once used as the base for the Bilger Quarry, located near the intersection of present-day Broadway and 51st Street. Rockridge stretches from the Berkeley border to 51st Street, and between Telegraph Avenue and Broadway. Prior to the earthquake of 1906, Rockridge was mostly farmland. Settlement happened rapidly in the teens and 20's and much of the available land-area was built up. The construction of the Bay bridge in 1936, the development of the local railroad and the rise of the shopping district on College Ave. gave Rockridge a more metropolitan feel, and over time, a sleepy farming community in Oakland evolved into one of the East Bay's most desirable residential and shopping districts.
