An earthquake can happen at any time. Being prepared with a disaster plan is the best way to protect your family. I recently attended a neighborhood CORE (Communities of Oakland Respond to Emergencies) meeting. I found the meeting both helpful and empowering. It gave me ideas for things I can do to prepare for a disaster.

Have a family plan and an earthquake kit ready ready to go. The thought prior to Hurricane Katrina was that a disaster kit should contain enough food and water for 72 hours. Now the experts know that we need to be prepared to be on our own for up to 7 days.
