Located between Oakland and Berkeley, Emeryville was mostly an industrial city in the early years after its founding. During World War II the industry was mostly ship building and other defense related work.

In the 1990s Emeryville underwent a transformation from being an old industrial town to a modern mixed use urban center. Now there are a number of shopping areas, the newest is Bay Street featuring a Pottery Barn, Banana Republic an AMC movie theater among just of few of the stores, restaurants and entertainment located along the street

Ikea, the Swedish furniture store opened its doors in Emeryville right around 2000.

Pixar Studios is also located in Emeryville on Park Street.
