About the Gourmet Ghetto
The Gourmet Ghetto is a convenient place to live.  As the name suggests, there are wonderful places to eat, excellent coffee shops and boutiques for clothes, shoes and upscale household items all within a few blocks.  There are two grocery stores, a produce market and a cheese shop all closely  situated.  The Farmer's Market offers organic produce on Thursday afternoons.

Gourmet Ghetto Home Styles
The Gourmet Ghetto is famous for having been the initial home of famous eateries
"From the beginning, Alice and her partners tried to do things the way they would like them done at a dinner party at home, with generosity and attention to detail. The Restaurant, located downstairs, is open for dinner Monday through Saturday, by reservation only. The fixed dinner menu consists of three to four courses. The menu which changes every night is designed to be appropriate to the season and composed to feature the finest sustainably-sourced, organic, and seasonal ingredients including meat, fish, and poultry" Excerpted from the Chez Panisse website
On the day Alfred Peet opened his first coffee store on the corner of Walnut and Vine Streets in Berkeley, CA, he quietly began a revolution in the way Americans experienced the taste and quality of their coffee – a revolution that persists to this day.
