Frank Lloyd Wright, who lived from 1867 to 1959, had a significant impact on all things architectural during his working lifetime. In 1901 Wright designed "Prairie" style homes using low horizontal lines and open spaces.  Architects who emulated Wright utilized the Prairie designs in California architecture .  The name Prairie School refers to the school of architects that designed homes using Frank Lloyd Wright's concepts in their work.

The architects of the Prairie School used a juxtaposition of boxes in order to optimize the building site.  Corner lots often have houses with the main entrance at the center and two wings that extend out.
