Some Arts and Crafts Terms

Some frequently used terms in describing Arts and Crafts architecture.

  • Board and Batten - Vertical siding where wood strips (battens) hide the seams where other boards are joined. Used in wainscot.
  • Wainscot - Paneling that reaches from the floor to about two thirds the height of a wall, capped with molding. In a dining room it may be capped with a plate rail.
  • Quater Sawn Oak -Quarter sawn oak is oak that is cut at a 90-degree angle from the growth rings on the log to create a uniform grain pattern. It was used commonly during the Arts and Crafts period.
