Temescal District

The Temescal District is within walking distance of both Rockridge and MacArthur BART stations; making it a very convenient place to live. Bake Sale Betty which opened a few years ago has made Temescal a place of comestible interest for visitors from out of the area. There is a tiny amount of counter space inside the shop. Old ironing boards have been set up on the sidewalk where the people who line up at lunch time for sandwiches can sit and enjoy their food.

For years Genova Delicatessen in Temescal has been a favorite eating spot during lunch hour. Besides sandwiches, Genova offers Italian delicacies of all kinds.

Temescal is a neighborhood that was probably developed right after Rockridge. The houses are mostly 2 and 3 bedroom homes with beautiful architectural details. The price point for homes is lower than in Rockridge.

Temescal House Styles

California Bungalow 1910 - 1925

The California Bungalow is an offshoot of the Arts and Crafts architectural style. They were most commonly one story or one and a half stories, with a low pitched roof, an accentuated overhang, and exposed rafter tails. They generally have a modest porch and frequently have a bay window.

Folk Victorian 1870 - 1910

The early Folk Victorians were the least ornate of the Victorian style...As pre-cut detailing became available through mass production, the later Folk Victorians became more detailed and ornate.

Victorian Neo-Classic 1895 - 1915

The Neo-Classic Victorian most commonly had a hipped roof, the front door and porch over to one side of the front, a bay, columns holding up the porch, and many have a gabled window for attic ventilation at the front .
