The Victorian style of architecture flourished during the reign of Queen Victoria, and was named in her honor. The buildings we call "Victorians" were actually constructed during that era. East Bay examples include Folk, Queen Anne, Shingle, Italianate and Neo-Classic styles.

Victorian architecture tended to be asymmetrical unlike the more box like Greek Revival architecture that was popular on the East Coast. The Industrial Revolution and manufacturing made mass production of spindles and other design elements of Victorian Architecture less costly and easier to acquire. The earlier Victorian such as the Folk Style were plain without much decoration. As the Indusrtial Revolution progressed the Victorian houses became more ornate with pre-cut mass produced embellishments.
